Joan McBride has served on the City Council since January 1998. Prior to her election to the City Council, Deputy Mayor McBride served as a member of the Houghton Community Council for six years, two terms as Chair.
In 2007, Deputy Mayor Joan McBride was awarded the “Elected Official of the Year” by the Alliance of Eastside Agencies for Outstanding Contributions to Human Services on the Eastside. She also received the 2007 Special Service Award by the King Conservation District, a regional land conservation organization. In 2004, Deputy Mayor McBride received the "Community Partnership Award" presented by King County and Public Health-Seattle and King County for outstanding contribution to Public Health for her work on creating Kirkland neighborhood walking maps.
Deputy Mayor McBride has lived in Kirkland for 49 years, graduated from Evergreen State College, and has an extensive background in human services, both professionally and as a volunteer. She is a founding board member of the Eastside Human Services Forum, a former board member of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and former Chair of the Kirkland Interfaith Network. Joan currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Bicycle Alliance of Washington and Family Resource Center. She also serves on the advisory board of Feet First. Joan served on the PTSA boards of Lakeview Elementary, Kirkland Junior High, and Lake Washington High School. Ms. McBride is a recipient of the Washington Traffic Safety Commission "Education" award, Kirkland Business and Professional Women "Women of Achievement" award, and Lakeview PTSA "Golden Acorn" award. Joan has worked to save popular public art sculptures in Kirkland, starting with the Puddle Jumpers.
Current committee assignments: Co-Chair of the Active Living by Design Advisory Committee, Chair of the Council Finance Committee, member of the City/School District Coordinating Committee, I-405 Advisory Task Force, Legislative Task Force, and Council Housing Committee.
Regional representation: Co-chair of WRIA 8, I-405 Executive Committee, King County Flood Control Advisory Committee, King County Conservation District Advisory Committee, and Eastside Transportation Partnership.
