General Information
Babysitters should be left with the following information:
- Medical information and medical history written for each child
- A written authorization to treat the child in case of emergency
Things that parents should do before they leave
- Lock all doors and windows
- Locate water shutoff and main breaker panel for baby sitter
- Remove garage door opener from the second car or shut off power to door opener
- Put all medications and poisons out of reach
- Locate flashlights and make them accessible
General Safety
- Cook on the back burners and turn handles inward
- Do not burn in fire place or wood stove unless it is the only heat source
- Have a fire escape plan and meeting place
- Know the location of fire extinguishers and how to operate them
Basic First Aid and Emergency Procedures
- Stop, drop, and roll (if clothes catch on fire)
- Hiemlich maneuver (for choking victims)
- Apply direct pressure to cuts and lacerations
- Call 9-1-1 in case of emergency. Know what the address is
General Information
The babysitter should ask the rules are regarding television, telephone, where kids can play, bedtime, when friends can come and play, and any medications taken (amount and time to give).
Babies
Only give a bath if parents asks. NEVER LEAVE ALONE IN TUB.
Ask for written directions regarding feeding and preparation of food.
What can hurt kids?
Plugs, cords, outlets, stairs, appliances, unsteady furniture, guns, plastic bags, knives, buttons (small objects), household cleaners, poisons, medications, hot liquids, matches, and lighters.
In the event of fire
Keep calm. Get yourself and the kids out of the house. DON’T GO BACK FOR ANYTHING. Go to a neighbor’s house to call 9-1-1.
Water Heater Temperature Setting
The recommended water heater setting is between 120 and 130 degrees.
If the water from the tap is too hot, scalding can occur in an extremely short time. Hot water is of particular danger for small children and handicapped individuals. The chart below gives some guidelines for water temperature safety.
