The Kirkland Cannery Building was completed in 1936 as a project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA.)
The Pound family took over operation of the Cannery in 1947 and continued operations until the closure of Kirkland Custom Seafood in 2001. Today, the Pound Family continues to own the Cannery building. In recent months, the Kirkland Cultural Council approached the Pound family to propose exploring the potential to preserve the Cannery Building for community use. As a first step in this exploration, the Kirkland City Council has funded an initial architectural study of the building to determine the building’s structural condition and to develop an approximate cost to redevelop the Cannery for a specific use.
As we conduct the Cannery study, we would appreciate your ideas about what this building could become in the future and who we should involve as part of a partnership to make such a project happen. Please help us preserve a community asset that is a significant part of Kirkland’s history.
